Art Workshops in Guatemala |
Calling all photo and travel enthusiasts !!
Spirit of Place / Guatemala
during Todos los Santos
(All Saints Day/Dia de los Muertos)
with Douglas BeasleyOctober 28 - November 6 2017
Once again popular instructor Doug Beasley will join us in Guatemala to celebrate with local indigenous Maya on one of their major feast days - Todos los Santos - All Saints Day November 1. (Image: Candles by Douglas Beasley)
On this day, families flock to the cemeteries to put colorful new paint headstones, bring flowers, fly kites and light candles at their families grave sites. It's a family picnic, visiting their loved ones who have died, eating 'fiambre' and celebrating into the night.
We'll explore small villages, their cemeteries, markets and simply observe (and photograph) people go about the business of their daily lives. Along the way, we'll spend time at a house of Maximon during his annual birthday celebration, build a 'Spirit House' honoring our own ancestors and friends who have died, experience a Mayan ceremony, and most importantly, meet and get to know people along the way.
Doug has been teaching with us in Guatemala since 1995 !! He will challenge your creative vision and help you open yourself to new ways of seeing on this visual exploration of Guatemala - a land where indigenous Mayan live as they have for centuries. (Image: Three Crosses by Douglas Beasley) Doug works with students to help them let go of their visual expectations and see what is actually through their viewfinder. His skill lies in initiating and facilitating thought provoking discussions - about all sorts of things that affect our view of the world - which is what our art is all about. Join us for an unforgettable experience !! We base out of UNESCO World Heritage Site La Antigua Guatemala, a lovely old colonial city, once the capital of all Central Americal.
But we also spend time up at Lake Atitlan, at the Posada Santiago, in the heart of the Mayan highlands. Here's the view from the Posada's gardens and we'll also explore other local lakeside villages. (Image: Calla Lilly and San Pedro Volcano by Liza Fourre)
Emphasis of this workshop is less on technique and more on increasing your visual awareness of the world around you. It is appropriate for photographers of all skill levels.
Join us for an unforgettable experience !!

"Doug is a wonderful teacher who focuses on helping students connect to their intuition and inner voice to expand their creativity. Guatemala was the perfect place to practice this spiritual approach to making pictures. "
Leslie J Yerman 10/11 " Doug was great as usual!!!! Loved the one on ones." Dinah McNew 10/09 "Doug's insights and experiences were very helpful in guiding me towards strengthening my vision. He recognized where we each were and pushed us respectively. He shared resources with us and made the environment encouraging and open rather than competitive, right away. That made me open to exploring and learning that much more." Doug is an artist who makes his living as a commercial and editorial photographer, currently focusing more on his fine art work and teaching. His workshops emphasize personal expression and creative vision over the mechanics of camera use. He believes in helping each student find their own voice rather than making anonymous 'pretty pictures'. A Jerome Travel Study Grant enabled him to travel to Japan, his mother's homeland, where he photographed how the sacred is woven into the daily life of the Japanese. This resulted in his first book JAPAN A Nisei's First Encounter. His most recent book Earth Meets Spirit was published by 5 Continents Editions in Milan, Italy and is distributed by Abrams. Doug is a popular instructor who teaches worldwide, including in such wonderful places as Hawaii, Ireland, China, Japan and Peru. He is the founder and director of the Vision Quest Photographic Arts Retreat Center in Wisconsin. He lives in a small wooden house in St Paul, surrounded by trees, where he tends his Japanese gardens. He is a lover of late night discussions and strong morning coffee. ***************************************************************************************************
