Express Yourself Painting Watercolors
with  Sheila Parsons

During the Feast Day of Santiago
21 - 30  July  2013
(it is NOT HOT -
 we are in the mountains!)

Hello all,  I am happy to announce we've added a new watercolor instructor to our

faculty.  Sheila Parsons has been teaching watercolor workshops all across the USA and around the world since 1976.  Teaching and painting are her passions in life !!

(Paintings: Volcan de Atitlan and Woman Washing  by Sheila Parsons)

Sheila is an enthusiastic and inspirational instructor with may years experience teaching all kinds of artists !!

On this watercolor adventure,  you will learn not only the technical skills needed to improve your watercolor paintings, but more importantly, Sheila will teach you how to successfully design and compose your work.

"The easy part of painting is learning the technical skills," Sheila says.  "The more difficult part is learning to draw the viewer into your painting. Inviting them to look and see the essence in a glance, but then keeping their attention long enough so that they'll continue to study the painting, looking more carefully at the details.

Each class begins with a short lecture and demonstration, and then while the class is out on location, Shelia works with each individual participant - giving them whatever help they needs.  She weaves technical topics, such as color contrast, perspective, mixing colors throughout the class time.

Sheila developed her artistic and teaching style working with acclaimed artist Milford Zornes for many years.  She assisted him in over 40 of his workshops !!Her students praise her for her inspiration - often telling her they've achieved more than they thought they could.

This experience is so much more than a

watercolor workshop!!

It's timed so that we'll be spending the anda church steps santiago colorful Feast Day of Santiago (St James July 25) in Santiago Atitlan.

It is a true small town festival, with ferris wheels, kids jumping on trampolines, a lovely procession from the church, and since the local people are dressed in their finest traditional costumes, and proud of their traditions, they generally do not mind picture taking.

We begin our adventure in lovely old colonial ANTIGUA. Once the colonial capital of all Central America, it is a delightful, small town with an international ambiance and features spectacular visuals, fabulous shopping (all those textiles!), wonderful outdoor cafés and restaurants, but most importantly, warm-hearted, welcoming  people.

We'll paint on location in beautiful gardens, lovely tumbling down ruins and with indigenous models while they weave in their traditional dress.

But then we'll head into the heart of the highlands, to magical, mystical LAKE ATITLAN where we'll stay three nites at the lovely POSADA SANTIAGO.  Lucky us !!

I shot this image of the lake and volcano San Pedro from the gardens at the Posada.  A lovely view to not only enjoy,
 but to draw and paint.

Shelia is an artist and enthusiastic workshop instructor - traveling, teaching and painting all over the world. She is the daughter of an artist and musician and while growing up was always surrounded by art and artists.  She decided at a very young age that she would be a painter and teacher of painting, and has successfully pursued that dream since 1976 when she began offering classes both internationally and across the USA.

Of all the countries Sheila has traveled to, she finds the most inspiration for her work in Italy, Bali, Mexico and, of course, Guatemala.  Most of her paintings are done on location or from sketches she has done in the field.  She received her MA from the Pratt Institute in New York and her mentor, Milford Zornes, tutored her in both painting and living as a traveling artist teacher.

Sheila recently received a Lifetime Achievement in the Arts award from Faulkner County (Arkansas) Library and in 1996 received the Arkansas Governor's Award for Outstanding Individual Artist of Arkansas. Watercolor Magazine featured Sheila's teaching style and work and her paintings have been published in several books.

She lives and works with her husband/manager Richard Talley, their three dogs and a cat in

their studio home in Conway, Arkansas.
